Why Trandos Farms Trust Thorntons: The Story of an Agricultural Powerhouse Partnering with Trusted Advisors

The 1930s and 1940s were a devastating period in Greek history. In 1938, foreseeing the upheaval that was about to envelop his country, and determined to build a better life for his family, Dimitrios Trandos left his wife and their two sons in their hometown in Northern Greece. He migrated to Australia, where he grew vegetables on a small plot of land in Wanneroo called Pappas Swamp.

Because of the upheaval in Europe, Dimitrios had to wait eleven years before his wife and sons were able to join him in Australia. Today, four generations later, Trandos Farms employs over 100 people and is the largest grower of sweet corn and beans in Western Australia, with farms in Neerabup, Gingin, Beermullah, and Broome.

Trandos Farms is a multi-generational family business. Present day MD, Jim Trandos, said “We’ve been in business for 85 years and are one of the oldest family businesses in Western Australia”.

Jim noted that the business had been through many changes and, particularly, in the last 20 years. “We wanted a year-round business model, so we purchased a farm 250km south of Broome. We only grow beans and corn, with winter production in the north, and summer production in the south. All our crops are machine picked and the waste is shipped to Gingin and is sufficient for us to run and feed 400 head of cattle.”

Why Trandos Farms Choose Thorntons as their Accounting Advisors

Asked about accounting and advisory services for his business, Jim commented, “A few years ago, I felt that we had a lot of unresolved issues, and needed more independent, impartial, and arms-length advice. It’s difficult for a private company to reach out and find a new accountant, but the more people I spoke to, the more the name Troy Anderson and Thorntons kept popping up.”

“I met with 4 different practices, and after I met Troy and Thorntons, my mind was made up. There was no second place and, ultimately, the decision to go with Thorntons was easy.”

“I certainly had some questions about the handover to a new accounting firm but was most impressed with the transition. They handled it in such a dignified, respectful, and compassionate manner. It showcased their integrity and professionalism. I knew immediately that Thornton’s were the right advisors for us.”

Thorntons – the Right People for Trandos Farms

“It’s been 4 years now and there’s never been a moment when we didn’t think we had found the right people. There were some challenges and complexity in the beginning, but now it’s all been cleaned-up and things are great. What I want from my advisors is commercial advice, and I want the truth, and with Thorntons I’m getting it. Since we went with Thorntons, things get done on time, we get good advice, and we get prompted to stay on track. I’m very happy with the service I’m getting and they’re really good people.”

“Since using Thorntons, I feel there’s nothing we’ve missed, and everything has been attended to. I feel safe.”
