Tidy Desk, Tidy Mind

Today is the official “Clean off your desk Day”

I’m known around our office as the Tidy Desk bully.  My emails and reminders to “have a little tidy up” haunt the team and to be honest I’m ignored most of the time!

I was brought up with the message “tidy desk tidy mind” instilled into me and it has stuck with me ever since.  Unfortunately this doesn’t mean that my own desk is always tidy, although it’s something I’m constantly striving for.  I always feel that I think more clearly when my desk is tidy and my emails cleaned out and organized.

Today is official “Clean Off Your Desk Day”, and whether you always have a perfectly tidy desk, or are like me, striving for perfection, these are some tips that you might want to consider:

  • Only keep the things you really need on your desk
  • Keep supplies near by – utilize organisers and drawers
  • Make friends with your rubbish bin – try to have a clear-out on a regular basis
  • Go less-paper – where possible scan and save documents
  • Set up a good filing system (both electronically and paper if necessary)
  • Take 5 minutes at the end of each day to clear your desk, and if needed write a “to do” list for the next day. On a weekly basis include an actual desk clean as well.

These same rules can be applied to how you run your business. As we all know, time is money and an efficient business model and practices can not only save you time and money, but your sanity when running your own business.
