Five avenues to help with the financial impact of TC Seroja

Our hearts go out to all those affected by TC Seroja, with a huge personal and financial cost, here are five avenues to help with the financial impact:

-The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Relief (AGDRP) payment of $1000 per adult and $400 per child has been made available to people in Carnamah, Chapman Valley, Greater Geraldton, Mingenew, Morawa, Northampton, Perenjori and Three Springs local government areas.

AGDRP is available for people who have been seriously injured, suffered major damage or lost their homes or major assets as a direct result of Tropical Cyclone Seroja. You have until 15 October 2021 to lodge a claim for AGDRP.

-The Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) provides income support payments to employees, primary producers and sole traders who can demonstrate they have experienced a loss of income as a direct result of Tropical Cyclone Seroja.

DRA provides fortnightly payments for up to 13 weeks up to the applicable rate of JobSeeker Payment or Youth Allowance, depending on the person’s circumstances. DRA is available to Australian residents who are 16 years and older.

The Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund which is open for donations (currently sitting at $3,485,724) and will eventually be open for applications from those in need of emergency relief. Keep an eye out for updates as to when applications are open.

-In speaking with some of the key software providers we hear that they may be able to offer hardship concessions for monthly subscription payments for those affected.

-The following ATO concessions may be available:

  1. Additional time to lodge.
  2. Concessions on providing ID (in case of lost identification documents).
  3. Assistance to re-issue documents.
  4. Assistance to reconstruct tax records (Thorntons can also assist).
  5. To prioritise refunds.
  6. To remit penalties or interest charges (conditions apply).
